Bar Pompette in Little Italy landed second nationally on the 2026 list and is routinely named Toronto's best cocktail bar. The draw is Parisian-style drinks built on unconventional ingredient pairings — the Cornichon Martini is the signature order, and the seasonal specials are where the kitchen and bar show off.

It is a European-style room: charming, not enormous, and best for a two-person evening rather than a group of eight. Go early or expect to wait.

Civil Liberties: no menu, all conversation

Civil Liberties in Bloorcourt operates without a menu. You tell the bartender what you are in the mood for and they build from a deep bench of house-made liqueurs. The bar was closed for much of the previous year after a major flood and returned with its identity intact — it remains one of the six Toronto rooms in the national top ten.

This is the pick if you enjoy the back-and-forth and are willing to be surprised. It is the wrong pick if you want to scan a list and order something you already know you like.

BarChef: the theatrical option

BarChef has spent years as the room people cite when arguing that Toronto belongs in the conversation nationally, and it is still widely described as one of the best cocktail bars in the country. The house style is precise, modern and unapologetically dramatic — drinks arrive as presentations.

Best for a first date you want to go well, or for showing a visitor that the city takes this seriously. Prices reflect the ambition.

Short Turn: the current insider pick

Short Turn, in Alexandra Park just off Queen West, is currently the top-rated cocktail bar in the city on Best Cocktails Guide with a 9.2 out of 10. It is intimate, shares space with the long-running 416 Snack Bar, and has become a fast destination for people who follow the craft side of the scene.

Small room, so the same caveat applies as at Pompette: two or three people, not a party.

Bar Raval: drinks with something to eat

Bar Raval takes its cues from Barcelona's pintxo bars — no reservations, standing room around oak barrels, salty snacks alongside expertly made cocktails. The carved wood interior is one of the most photographed in the city.

It is the answer when you want a proper drink but also want food that is more than a bowl of olives, and when your plans are loose enough to handle a no-reservations door.

The wider field

Beyond the headliners, the 2026 lists also flag Bar Poet, And/Ore, Library Bar, Eclipse Lounge & Grill, Flora Lounge, Lyla, Prequel & Co. Apothecary and Bar Batavia — a useful set of backups when the first choice has a queue. Two practical notes. Most of these rooms are small, and the good ones fill by nine on a weekend — go at opening or go on a Tuesday. And geography still matters: Little Italy, Bloorcourt, Queen West and the core are each a streetcar ride apart, so pick a neighbourhood and build the night there rather than crossing the city between drinks.
